So, I decided to take a few minutes and run a few foreign documents through the three translation programs I have, just to see how they did.  As far as I know, these are the best of the bunch, SysTran, PowerTranslator, and Universal Translator 2000.  Both the manual to my Pentium CPU and my Logitech mouse are in multiple languages, so I took the English, French and Spanish pages, scanned a few paragraphs, then ran them through the programs, translating them into English. 

I'll save you the boring details.  Suffice to say that the answer to the question, "Which one is the best translation program?" is "None of the above".  They all had their very odd faults.  SysTran didn't know the Spanish word for "guarantee", although the other two did.  Stuff like that went on and on.  If I had to pick one, I guess I'd take L&H Power Translator.  Universal Translator seemed to be the goofiest of the bunch. 

But an even more interesting test is to take an English document, translate it to another language (French in this case), and then translate it right back with the same program.  If it can't even translate ITSELF back, it's hard to have much confidence it'll be able to translate anything from the outside very well.
